Jonathan was first introduced to competitive shooting in 1959 while a student at University of Oregon and enrolled in Air Force ROTC. He enlisted in the Oregon National Guard in 1963 and was a Member of Oregon’s SARTS (Small Arms Readiness Training Section) from 1978-1981; then again from 1985-present. Jonathan was instrumental in the development of the Marksmanship Enhancement Training (MET) program. He instructed both the SAIROC and Master Marksmanship Training Course. He was Team Captain from 1990 to 1993, competed at the All Army level from 1969 until 1993 and won numerous individual matches. He was the All Army Individual Champion in 1989. Jonathan has competed in the Wilson Matches each year since its inception in 1971. Has won 20 Chief 50 Badges, more than twice as many as any other Guardsman, meaning he has finished in the top 18 Rifle shooters from the over 600 who were competing each year. He has competed at the National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio as a member of the All Guard Team since 1969 and was High National Guard Shooter three times (1986, 1988 and 1989). He has been a member of 12 National Championship teams as a shooter, and coached 13 junior teams who have won National Championships. His greatest accomplishment was winning the President’s Match in 1988 against 1542 other competitors. Over the 30 plus years of his shooting career, he has set 26 National Shooting Records in competition. His Highpower classification is High Master. Jonathan is a member of NRA’s 495 Club (shot 3 scores of 496 out of 500). Fred began shooting pistol in regular army at Fort Devens, MA. He qualified to shoot service pistol at the all army matches in 1961 and was picked up by the All Army Team and competed at Nashville, TN, the Regional Match at Canton, OH and the National Pistol Championships at Camp Perry, OH. In 1962 received 20 EIC points at Camp Perry. He is a member of Vermont National Guard State pistol from 1974 to 2002, with 28 years of service. Fred became distinguished in the pistol category by receiving his final 10 points by winning the EIC Match at the Winston P. Wilson Championships in 1974. He also received the Chief’s 50 in 1974. Fred was selected by the All Guard team in 1975 and served continuously until July 2002. Fred represented the US National Guard at Inter-service pistol match, All Army Match and National Championships. He qualified for Presidents 100 in 24 of the 29 years of competing at Camp Perry and became a member of the 2650 Club by shooting a score of 2654 in 1979. He won the Pistol Championships at Wilson Matches in 1981, the .45 caliber National Championship at Camp Perry in 1991, and High National Guard Shooter at Camp Perry 1991. Fred was a member of the all guard team that set new national team record for .22 caliber at Main State Championships. Cpt. Powell was a firing member of the All Guard Pistol team for over ten
years. During that time he won the Winston P. Wilson pistol matches three
times, the All Army Matches three times and the Interservice Championships
twice. He was the high guard shooter five times at Camp Perry Ohio. He
placed in the Presidents 100 virtually every year he shot at Perry. He won
the service pistol championship at Camp Perry. Cpt. Powell was the OIC of
the All Guard pistol team for three years. During that time, he was also one
of the top firing members of the team. During his career, Cpt. Powell
achieved a score of 2670 out of a possible 2700, (one of the best scores
every fired by a National Guardsman). Cpt. Powell is still very active in
the shooting shorts. He hosts two matches a year at Columbia, TN. These
matches cater mostly to the military shooters. Because of his talent and
dedication to the military shooters, the shooters of the All Guard pistol
team have greatly improved their shooting skills.
